According to AZO Materials in their article “Descaling – Metallurgical Processes,” descaling is a common practice where oxide deposits are removed from metal at some point in the forging process.

“Descaling is a metal cleaning process that removes unwanted surface deposits on metals to provide a smooth surface finish and is a part of the pre-finishing processes which include cleaning, stripping and pickling,” AZO Materials said.
