As detailed by The War Zone in its article titled “Army Tanks And Other Vehicles Get New Paint Jobs To Help Hide From Thermal Optics”, the U.S. Army has unveiled a new high-tech coating aimed at reducing the infrared signatures of its M1 Abrams tanks and other armored vehicles. The initiative, part of the Army’s broader strategy to maintain operational superiority, introduces a next-generation coating called TALON, developed by the Army Ground Vehicle Systems Center in collaboration with the Army Research Laboratory and the Manufacturing Technology (ManTech) program.
While the Army has yet to release the technical details behind TALON, it is designed to minimize heat absorption and emission from critical vehicle components like engines, electronics, and even suspension systems. These thermal signatures are key vulnerabilities on modern battlefields, where adversaries equipped with thermal imaging optics can detect and engage armored vehicles from long distances—even at night or through smoke and dust.
