In an insightful article titled “The pros and cons of powder and liquid coatings” by Fleet Equipment Magazine, the dynamics of powder and liquid coatings are explored, shedding light on their respective advantages and disadvantages.
Powder coating, known for its lower Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) content, higher dry film thickness, and efficient overspray recycling, offers distinct advantages. However, specialized electrostatic spray equipment is required, limiting its application on surfaces without conductivity. The need for baking in an oven and challenges in achieving thin film builds are notable disadvantages.
On the other hand, liquid coatings provide low VOC options and can be applied at lower film builds, offering economic advantages. Ambient cure options and a wide variety of color variations from a single toner mixing bank add to the appeal. Yet, challenges such as high VOC content, the need for proper ventilation, and significant training for competent application pose hurdles.
